In modern times, people’s lives have become wealthier and lifespans have been consistently increasing. However, there is nearly a ten year gap between average life expectancy (the number of years between birth and death) and health expectancy (the number of years one is able to live independently). In other words, people will live with some sort of physical illness for as long as ten years. Most of these illnesses are due to bones becoming damaged or weakening. Enabling people to live and work healthily for as long as possible requires bone restoration. And teeth are also bones.
Humans live by replenishing nutrients through eating. Eating is an important source of life. The more teeth we lose – in other words, the fewer usable teeth we have – the greater hindrance we will face in trying to live a healthy, vibrant life.
Therefore, the ability to restore teeth has been one of humanity’s long-held dreams.
And now, it is possible.
However, lost teeth do not regrow. They are reconstructed using artificial teeth.
So while not within the realm of regenerative medicine, nearly all dental functions can be reconstructed. That is the role of implants.
Furthermore, placing an implant into a jaw bone requires regeneration of the jaw bone itself, and now, materials and technologies have been created that enable regeneration of one’s bones.
It has now become possible for people in the world to broadly benefit from regenerated and reconstructed bones and teeth.
